Do I Need a License to Operate my ATV?

If you are considering purchasing an ATV you may be wondering, do you need a license for your ATV? Unlike snowmobiles, ATVs do not require a license to be used on private property. Though you don’t need a license to operate your ATV there are a few things you may wish to know before you purchase your new vehicle.

In this article, we will detail what you should know about ATV ownership. From where you can drive it, to recreation and safety, we are here to help. At Bob’s Motorsports, we are passionate about your outdoor Powersports experience. Contact us if you have questions about ATV ownership. We would be pleased to provide you with the information to empower your Suzuki ATV or Yamaha ATV purchase.

Where Can I Drive My ATV?

Generally, ATVs are not permitted to be used on public roadways, though there may be exceptions that apply to your situation. If you require to cross a road you are permitted to do so. Additionally, if you are using your vehicle for farming or other purposes you may be allowed to drive your ATV on public roads. If the park allows it, public and provincial parks may also allow you to operate your ATV within them. None of these scenarios require special licensing.

Do I Need to Wear a Helmet on an ATV?

Though on private property helmets are not a legal requirement when operating an ATV, it is a recommended practice. A helmet is the best way for you to keep yourself safe from serious head injuries that could arise while operating your ATV. Additionally, if you are operating your ATV on public property in relation to the exceptions mentioned above, you should be wearing a helmet. Always keep safety a top priority and wear a helmet when appropriate to do so.

How Old Must I Be to Operate an ATV?

Those who operate an ATV should be twelve years of age. Though on private property children younger than 12 may operate an ATV, this only should be done under close supervision of an adult and the owner of the ATV. Always ensure that children operating an ATV are wearing a helmet and protecting their body from injuries that could arise from operating the ATV.

Do I Need to Register My ATV?

In Ontario, you are required to register your ATV. Upon paying the fee to register your ATV you will obtain a vehicle permit and license plate. A person must be 16 years of age to register their ATV or off-road vehicle. Check with your province to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information pertaining to the registration of off-road vehicles and ATVs.

Stay Safe

Always remember that safety should be your top priority when operating any motor vehicle, including ATVs. It is illegal to operate an off-road vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and just as if you were operating a truck or can, do not drink and drive. Consider wearing an ATV helmet and other body protection to keep you covered in the event of an accident. Always ensure that children who operate your ATV have appropriate safety gear.
